The dispute over the date and extent of the dismantling of the IRA (disarmament) blocked the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement until Trimble, inspired by IRA concessions, convinced the Ulster Union Council, the governing body of the UUP, to give it the power to govern with Sinn Féin in 1999 and 2000. In July 2001, Trimble briefly resigned as prime minister, accusing the IRA of failing to comply with its decommissioning agreement. He was Prime Minister until October 2002, when the Northern Ireland Assembly was suspended by the British government. “But we said, “No, we`re going to relax together” – and I thought that would be a very clear indication of how we were going to implement the agreement.” The threat of a legal challenge from Trimble is reminiscent of his resolution as a lawyer, regardless of the desperate cause. Even if a judge agreed to hear such a challenge and not dismiss it as academic (on the basis that the withdrawal agreement could never be ratified), his two main arguments are thin on paper. “There are people who are telling lies about the deal, and many of them are Irish-American,” Said Lord Trimble. Trimble began his career as a law professor at Queen`s University Belfast in the 1970s, during which he began to engage with the Progressive Party of Unionism paramilitary associated Vanguard. He was removed from the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention in 1975 and joined the UUP in 1978 after the dissolution of the VPUP. He remained at Queen`s University until he was elected member of Parliament for the Upper Bann in 1990. In 1995, he was elected head of the UUP. He played an important role in the negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and, along with John Hume, won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts this year. Subsequently, he was elected the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, although his tenure was turbulent and often interrupted by disagreements over the timing of the dismantling of the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
